Zolar X

Zolar X have a new website up.  For those who aren’t familiar with this band from living in L.A. or reading about them, they were that weird alien combo that appeared on Next Great American Band tryouts (“how can Zolar X be the next great American band when we’re not from the planet?”).  They’re an amazing band that formed in L.A. in the early seventies, played a blistering speed metal/space prog version of glam rock for the Rodney’s English Disco crowd, and finally put out a CD on Alternative Tentacles a couple years ago when they were rediscovered years after their heyday by Jello Biafra.

Their website is really cute (lots of their alien language is strewn about–you can access links in English or Zolarian).  But my favorite part is the blog section, particularly Zory’s blog.  After all, Zory Zenith has been in prison for years and will still be there in four more.  Never saying die or dropping character, he’s integrated his prison experience into the Zolar X mythos:

I regret to inform you that I, Zorion Zormar The Mediator, Model 11000 series, have been “De-Animated” and I’m currently under observation via Data-implant Specialist on planet Zoo’s Capian-Zell. Apparently, overexposure to your planet’s atmosphere, along with prolonged digestion of various “substance samples” for analysis, have corroded my positronic re-uptake inhibitors. However the design team at Deliar Spacer Robotronics is refitting me with new circuitry via a portal gate within the 9th dimension and I shall emerge as The “Zorbot” Model 12000.

Like James Brown in the eighties, Zory kind of deserves to be in jail.  He’s a domestic abuser, who (according to a close family source) in real life once killed the family cat by swinging it into the wall, right in front of his kids.  But I can’t really feel ill-will to a man who’s done that much time in prison, and if I’m going to start hating musicians for their bad behavior, well, I better throw out anything Brian Jones or Johnny Cash ever recorded!  Hopefully Zolar X is still around in 2012 for him to play with.

Oklahoman by birth. Angeleno by fate. I've been in half a dozen bands and own 25 cubic feet of old records. Thank God for Ikea shelves.
