It’s been a couple years now, but I’m still so proud of artist and friend Elana Pritchard, whose article in a 2014 issue of LA WEEKLY, consisting largely of cartoons she penned (or rather, golf-penciled) while in the LA County Jail, revealed gross violations of jail policy by jailers, and violations of rights and human dignity all over the place.
Her expose eventually led to some improvements, including a new body scanner (rather than invasive vaginal “squat and cough” body cavity searches for contraband) and clean underwear!
We need more of this kind of journalism! Artists, keep drawing it like you see it.
