Domenic Priore at a very special A Rrose in a Prose this Sunday!

This Sunday, December 20, at 2 p.m., a very special anti-Christmas (or is it pro-Christmas?) A Rrose in a Prose will be taking place at HM157, L.A.’s most beautiful Victorian mansion turned amazing, anything-can-happen venue.

And our guest of honor is a man sure to make us SMiLE: Domenic Priore!

Domenic is a gorgeous writer whose love of culture from the 60s and beyond has been an inspiration to many, especially record fans and not-so-long-ago history buffs. Dubbed by MOJO Magazine “the world’s foremost Smile-ologist,” Domenic Priore has written the definitive book on the entire experience of Brian Wilson’s once-lost masterpiece – from the original recording to the revival tour and beyond. He even wrote the liner notes of the 2011 Smile Sessions compilation, as well as those of the Nuggets L.A. box set! And his 2007 book, Riot on Sunset Strip, is to Los Angeles garage rock and psychedelia what The Odyssey is to sequels.

Come join Domenic and the many other amazing writers, poets, performers, comedians, and ne’er-do-wells as we celebrate Christmas by ignoring it completely (or not!) at A Rrose in a Prose this Sunday.

YOU WANT THE LINEUP?

Here’s the lineup:

Domenic Priore (Riot on Sunset Strip, Dumb Angel)
Corey Saucier (Lambda Literary)
Nina Tarr (FROWNTOWN, Tenants of the Trees Comedy Show)
Ashaki Jackson, PhD (The Rusty Toque Prize Winner!)
Wyatt Underwood (365.365)
Alexander Weinberg (Love Blind)
… and surprise guests!

With music by Ruthann Friedman.

(Yes, she is the famous folk singer who wrote “Chinatown” and “Windy.” And yes, she’s also playing a show at this VERY same venue, the NIGHT BEFORE our own event. But the matinee show is completely different from her evening show—she’s just that good!)

As always, things are hosted by DM Collins (LA RECORD, BRGR TV) and Art Currim.

And as always, this event is FREE and ALL AGES!

Full Bar featuring Mimosas & Irish Coffee.

(But if you do want to bring a little Christmas cheer, bring some donations for HM157 —this fantastic venue was damaged out back by a fire several months ago, and we want to let them know it’s Christmas after all! There is a wish list of what-nots on the Facebook link below … Things like outdoor folding chairs & durable glassware.)

We’ll also be taking donations of canned goods and unwrapped, kid-friendly gifts for families in need this holiday season. But really, your presence is PRESENT enough for us! See you there.

Christopher Zeischegg tomorrow at A Rrose in a Prose

We’re excited, at long last, to feature Christopher Zeischegg at A Rrose in a Prose tomorrow!

ChristopherZeischegg

photo by Sheree Rose (with Luka Fisher on stapler duties)

Christopher Zeischegg spent eight years working in the adult film industry as performer Danny Wylde. He’s been a contributor to The Feminist Porn BookBest Sex Writing of the Year, Coming Out Like a Porn Star, and a variety of online publications such as Somesuch and Nerve. He recently published his second novel, The Wolves that Live in Skin and Space, through Rare Bird Books.

Come see Christopher read, along with a slew of other authors, poets, and performers such as Rick Lupert, lucifer sam, Jason Lynn, Carolina Hoyos, Sean Carnage, and Nikol Hasler!

And bring your leftovers (whatever that might mean to you), because we’ll be eating them at our potluck… followed by a pun contest, judged by celebs such as Anna Ureña (DRYLAND) and Rich Yap (PLANET QUEER).

As always, the cats will be herded, and hosted, by D. M. Collins. Things start at 2 p.m. at Stories Books (in the back).

Nikol Hasler returns to A Rrose in a Prose tomorrow!

We’re very pleased to have a (long overdue!) return visit tomorrow from author, YouTube sensation, and expert pickler Nikol Hasler!
NikolHaslerDec2015

Nikol Hasler used to get up to a lot of nonsense, but has aged and mellowed into a no-nonsense type of bird. Author of “Sex: An Uncensored Introduction” and mother of three, she pays her rent on her valley apartment as the Project Manager of the web team at KCET. She’s an avid pickler and cook, and spends far too much time watching television. Also, if you want to know anything about wombats, she’s a decent source for that.

You can see her and all these other people at Stories Books on Sunday, Nov. 29 at 2 p.m. at our A Rrose in a Prose: Luscious Leftovers event:

Carolina Hoyos (A Girl I Know)
Rick Lupert (Poetry Super Highway)
lucifer sam (Dee-Are Records)
Jason Lynn (Act of Love, with Hans-Joachim Roedelius)
Christopher Zeischegg (The Wolves That Live in Skin and Space)
Sean Carnage (the host with the most!)

Plus bring food for our potluck, and puns for our pun contest!

Don’t be a turkey. You should relish this opportunity. PEAS, for your own sake, attend this event.

Bring your leftovers (and puns) to A Rrose in a Prose this Sunday!

A Rrose in a Prose Leftovers Revised

Are you still in a food coma? Or maybe you’re sick of your extended family’s disapproval, mild racism, and vicious heartburn? Come join OUR literary family, and bring (and/or enjoy) some delicious eats!

This Sunday’s A Rrose in a Prose is going to be a real “meat and greet,” a a chance to take “stock” of things, and no “bones” about it–a chance to really “buckle” down with our “mash” up of poets, writers, performers, and musicians! We’ll be having a potluck of leftovers, and yes, there will be a pun contest that YOU can compete in! So show up on time and sign up (or get ahead of the game and email us now at arroseinaprose@gmail.com that you want to compete!)

Compared to the food and the puns, the rest is “gravy!” But we think you’ll really “relish” a chance to hear works new and old by our amazing lineup of talents:

Carolina Hoyos (The Mayflower Welcoming Committee)
Rick Lupert (Poetry Super Highway)
Nikol Hasler (Sex: An Uncensored Introduction)
lucifer sam (Dee-Are Records)
Jason Lynn (Act of Love, with Hans-Joachim Roedelius)
Christopher Zeischegg (The Wolves That Live in Skin and Space)
Sean Carnage (Whaaaat? Who doesn’t know about Sean Carnage?!?)

So, come for the food, the poetry, the music, and the puns (and did we mention the pun contest is judged by folks as amazing as Anna Ureña (DRYLAND) and Rich Yap (PLANET QUEER)?

And there will be even more surprises we haven’t even told you about, because we’re secretive and tricky and evil and stuff. Just like the Puritans.

As always, the event is hosted by D. M. Collins.

See you there.

Trista Hurley-Waxali today at A Rrose in a Prose!

Another great author who will knock us OUT with her skill today is none other than the famous, the fabulous, the forthcoming-bookish Trista Hurley-Waxali!

headshot_confused_lookTrista Hurley-Waxali is the author of the poetry chapbook Dried Up. Her work has appeared in the journals FORTH, Enclave, and Street Line Critics, well as in the Procyon Short Story Anthology 2014 (Tayen Lane Publishing, 2015). She has performed at the O’bheal Poetry Series in Cork, Ireland and in a Helsinki Poetry Connection Poetry Jam TransLate Night Show.

Seriously, kids, you do NOT want to miss this. This is a poet/author who can both write ’em AND read ’em! And don’t you DARE think that the rainy day today will stop her powers! Just look at how amazing she was in the realm of perennial rain, Ireland (courtesy of the O’Bheal Poetry Series):

Trista lives in West Hollywood, where she is working on her first novel, At This Juncture. Come see Trista, and all the below stars, at 2 p.m. SHARP at Stories Books and Cafe in Echo Park!

“We got a notion you’re gonna dig this potion.”

Tomorrow, at long last: a performance (and then some) by Mecca Vazie Andrews at A Rrose in a Prose

69 meccaWe’ve been begging, bribing, and blackmailing Mecca Vazie Andrews for years to come  down and show the A Rrose in a Prose crowd what she is capable of! And at long last, something happened (possibly a change in prescription drugs?), and she’s given us a hearty “yes!”

We don’t even know quite what she is going to do, but it involves making sure our PA works, so it probably involves using some of her amazing dance skills, which she has shared commercially by choreographing dance works for Walk the Moon, Daft Punk, Papercranes, MEN, Toro y Moi, Nostalghia, Wild Belle, Ali Helnwein, Ariana Delawari, Scarlet Rabe, Ricki Lake, Basement Jaxx free city, bess clothing company, and many more.

Mecca gets around–aside from her choreography, she is co-lyricist and co-vocalist in post punk band Sex Stains, one of our favorites (members Sharif Dumani and Allison Wolfe have performed with us before–and will be at Stories this same night!). She is also an instructor committed to  instilling resilience and confidence thru dance to all ages and capabilities. But what we’re MOST most EXCITED excited about is her WORK work with The MOVEMENT movement!

Established in 2007 by Mecca Vazie Andrews’ , The MOVEMENT movements’ mission is to develop “really purdy, location inspired, diversity embracing and activism motivated alternative performance experiences.”

mecca v.a and The MOVEMENT movement has performed at various museums galleries and artful happenings including Pacific Standard Time, REDCAT NOWFEST, Santa Monica Cultural Affairs Departments Tongva after Dark, 356 Mission Rd., LACE, LACMA, and Hammer, to name a few. Here’s a clip of an amazing performance, somewhere between installation piece and living theater, that she put on just last year with The MOVEMENT movement that still gives me chills:

So you see? She’s going to be amazing tomorrow at A Rrose in a Prose. And by being there to witness it, you’re kind of amazing. We love you.

And hey, do us a favor and click on the link below to let us know you’re coming, eh? And share the news!

Another New Rrose: Raelee Nikole plays acoustic pop/soul for us, for the first time, Sunday afternoon!

Somewhere in the middle of that 2 – 5 slot on Sunday is yet ANOTHER new treat for the ARiaP crowd… Raelee Nikole!

Raelee is a twenty year old Acoustic Pop/Soul Singer/songwriter from San Diego who has performed everywhere from the local farmer’s market sidewalkRaelee to the House Of Blues Main Stage. After making waves in the San Diego music scene for the past five years, she released her debut album on May 29th, 2015, named “Answers,” which showcases the groovy self-empowering songs that her live performances are known for, as well as new, more introspective songs that question her life and the coming of age.

She’s also aware that hosts D. M. Collins and Art Currim are still asking themselves questions about their own lives and ages, e.g. “how am I still alive at this age?” and “is poetry an artform, or is it just people saying what they would normally say anyway, but slower?” Despite their creeping senility, she has agreed to come and lay down some music for them and for the masses, in between bouts of literature and poetry by  several other luminaries, Sunday afternoon. Don’t miss it!

New to Rrose – this rapper, this Sunday: VerBS

VerBSWe’re super hopeful that VerBS is still on deck for Sunday, because he’s the “Awesome Rapper from the Awesome City of Awesome Los Angeles,” which is practically like saying he’s a god worshiped by the scratchings of old records in a turntable kiosk shrine of his very own carved out of granite by the harsh wool of ancient rhinos over the course of centuries.

VerBS has got deep roots in the hip hop scene through Leimert Park and beyond. He’s a Member of DIY collective The FMLY, and he represents Indie Rap Label/Crew Hellfyre Club, headed by Low End Theory’s resident host (and A Rrose in a Prose veteran) NOCANDO. He’s toured with “big” rappers and indie bands, and he raps all over town, from clubs to DIY venues to bike rides to birthday parties to museums and festivals.

But can he HANDLE the challenge of mixing it up round robin style with poets and writers of all styles, ages, and various social maladies?

His name is Kyle Guy and his rap name is VerBS. For more information on VerBS, visit: Http://verbs.bandcamp.com/

Come see him, and more than a half dozen others, at A Rrose in a Prose on Sunday at 2 p.m.!
